There were droplets of rain on her window, the rain showers were getting lighter after a huge storm, but maybe not as huge a storm as the one in her head. She looked out the misty panes. Calm was returning outside, she wished she could say the same for her emotions. They were all over, torn apart. She was at crossroads and needed to make a decision fast. Tamara wondered whether
a fast decision can also be a correct one. Tamara needed a light quick shower to help clear her mind. Her evening was the most eventful she had ever had. She should have left Zack send her the cab, but wait, this was her chance to make up her mind. She reflected on how the night had panned out, right to this moment;
“You will find me at The Brine” boomed Zack. He was in his cab heading out. The heavy mauve trench coat at his side would double up as a gift as it would be his gentleman’s code for when it gets really chilly. He planned on keeping Tamara out late. The Upperhill Nairobi streets and buildings will make a good backdrop for a walk, ad yes, the moon was definitely coming out to play. He preferred not to drive that evening so he would give her all his attention and maybe get a bit sloshed with rum.
“You are late!” whispered Hanson as he wrapped Tamara in his bear hug. “But you look gorgeous in black”. “Hans, you smell heavenly” responded Tamara. They were at Hans’ church for the Christmas party. Hans loved church. Most of the “dates” they had been on revolved around church. She didn’t mind the experience, getting to see him sing or even give the sermon but because of that, she feels she barely knew him. Once in a while he would call her to his eatery in town or carry some goodies to a picnic but Tamara has only one memory of a picnic. His cooking was the stuff of legends though. His eatery was doing good. It seems the decision to leave his position as the assistant chef de cuisine at the five start multinational hotels was paying off. That is one thing she liked about him. He was a visionary, risk taker and hands on workaholic; he would give her the kind of life she wanted. That was also the problem, he was all work and church, no play, yet nothing dull about Hans. He was exciting, driven, high energy as far as she could tell in the spaces they had met.
She sat down quietly at the space reserved for her. Hans left her with a wink and a cheeky half-smile. He was off, up and about doing the church boy stuff. She hated that he could not just sit by her side and enjoy the moment. Tamara startled from her thoughts, her phone beeped. The beep meant only one person. She had assigned Zack an alert tone for calls and messages. She fished it out, looked around and opened…
“Shall I arrange for your cab? Pin me your location asap, can’t wait to see you Tammy”. Zack was something else. With him, adrenaline is always on the extra. He is so wild and exciting you would not believe the kindness and tender care is coming from the same human. “I will be with you later Zack and thanks for being thoughtful but I will hail the cab myself when I am ready. See you my knight”
This is all up to her to figure out. She put the phone away. It was drum rolls at the Christmas Cantata. The event was starting off with carols. Hans was as usual in the midst of it all – song and church fun-fare was his drug of sorts. He must have a lot of darlings dying for his attention at this church and all the others he goes to event. Anyway, that is up to him and them. Soon, the carols were over. She knew the drill, he was going to freshen up, deal with the sweat and have a change of clothes. She was going to tell him that she was leaving for a night out and he was welcome to join. Tamara knew Hans would choose the party over her and she was banking on that to leave the event and join Zack.
“I will have a lavender greyhound, make it smoky on the rocks please, thanks”. Tamara was all goose bumped. Zack has an effect on her she could not explain. He is a nice guy but rough on the ages. He heads a men’s forum at their church but he is wild enough for the occasional club. He is a former mixologist. He is gone back to school to be a sommelier. Adventure is his second name but he is clear about everything. Tamara remembers clearly when Zack helped a woman deliver a baby in the deeps of the Mara…yes, the Maasai Mara. He cut the umblical cord too. From that day, he felt so safe. He then went on to talk about how he has always desired to have a dozen kids. It is evident he would do a good job with them, they are so easy around him.
“Tamara!” boomed Hans in a familiar but now desperate voice. “What are you doing here and who is this?” He had received mail alert on his phone and knew where Tamara had gone. She was subscribed to his Uber app after she received bad reviews from a malicious driver. It was getting hard for her to get a cab and so Hans offered his email for her to subscribe, plus she could always use his designate credit card for the trips.
“Excuse me gentlemen, I need a bathroom break”, with that, she left the scene and was back at her apartment. She risked the storm and was back home early morning with a storm of her own. She stood at the misty window wondering, who between Zack and Hans is worth the while of ever after…
Oh wow! Now this is a piece!
