I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord the maker of heaven and earth. Knowing God was with me through birth brought comfort, assurance and strength. Even now that I am going through motherhood, the verse above has been and is my anchor in so many ways.
After birth of a baby, what follows is the removal of the placenta. A woman's body is such a wonder and wired for motherhood that the placenta is not part of your body organs but as soon as conception happens during the first trimester the placenta grows and this helps to support and nourish the growing baby during pregnancy. After you give birth it cannot continue staying in the body and a new one is usually formed with every pregnancy. So after baby is out you also expell the placenta. This isn’t a complicated process neither is it painful. The placenta naturally detaches itself from the uterine wall through the help of oxytocin hormone. In fact in my case I was asked to cough a bit to trigger some muscle movement and it was out. Am a very curious person and I asked to see my own placenta which was showed to me. I was wowed at God’s creativity. Should you want to see yours, just make a request.
Among my top most desires was not to tear during birth. After delivery, it was time for that to be checked by the attending nurse. Tearing happens on the perenium, and it’s a common occurrence among women though it is not the norm. In my case I desired and believed not to have a tear, honestly I was afraid of being stitched and the processes around what it takes to heal. In some cases when the child is big an episiotomy is done; which a small incision is done to avoid a higher degree irregular tear. I am grateful for those who went before me and came back with a positive report. A friend who had given birth few months earlier gave me her testimony on how she delivered and didn’t tear. I was encouraged and my faith was lifted. Well, as good as your guess is, I didn’t tear and so there was no need for a stitching procedure.
However, it’s important to note that vaginal wounds heal well and fast therefore incase the natural tear happens, worry not. It’s interesting to note that there are also things that can be done to avoid the tear, in my case, my delivery team (God bless those souls for me) guided me on breathing and pushing, this greatly helped in preventing the tear. Another thing was that my nurse constantly massaged my perennial area as I pushed and that contributed greatly to relaxing the muscles and also preventing any strain. In all this, its important to have the correct information and not be afraid. Fear causes tension in the muscles and it makes birth process harder, painful and can cause the delivery process to take a different direction. Our bodies as women have been miraculously designed for birth and in most cases this works perfectly when we feel safe, calm and relaxed. This is definitely a state you can bring yourself to.
I have come to realize when we focus on connecting with God and having the right knowledge, our bodies are able to work as they are miraculously designed to; producing more oxytocin and endorphins making the process faster and more comfortable. The mind has a great role to play so above all guard your mind and focus on what is true and of benefit.
Think about the Hebrew women. Its said that the midwives termed the women as vigorous that they gave birth before the arrival of the midwives. This helped the male children evade Pharaoh's verdict of eliminating them, this is because the women gave birth with ease and quickly. This is just a representation of the available possibilities to all of us.
You as a woman are a wonder. In the words of Virginia Diorio; “just as a woman’s heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how to give birth.”
